The Dance Diet Fes 2026 Summer takes over the Ikebukuro West Gate Park outdoor theatre on July 20, 2026, the Marine Day public holiday. The event runs from 12:00 to 19:00, rain or shine, and admission is free. Now in its fourth year, the festival is organized by the ONESTEP PROJECT executive committee and produced by D-fitt, with backing from Toshima-ku and the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce Toshima branch.
The festival is built on a simple premise: health does not have to mean deprivation. Dance is the entry point, and the event mixes a dance contest stage with a food zone, a digital stamp rally, and a kids area. About 200 performers appear on stage across the day, with age and experience levels ranging from first-timers to experienced crews.
The ONESTEP Challenge Stage
The centrepiece from 15:30 onward is the ONESTEP Challenge Stage, renamed from the previous Dance Diet Contest. The format invites performers of any age and experience level to take the stage with a routine built around a personal challenge rather than a pure technique competition. The audience votes, and your vote helps decide the winner. The name change signals the shift from a contest about weight loss to a stage about taking one step forward.
Judges include BOW, formerly of Tokyo Gegegay, and Shin Onoda of Jessys Tore. The MC is MC Nishigaki. Past editions drew praise from attendees for the warmth of the crowd and the personal stories behind the performances, and the organizers have leaned into that reception by keeping the contest's narrative framing rather than treating it as a standard dance battle.
Healthy food trucks and the stamp rally
The food zone brings together about 10 kitchen cars and stalls selling healthy-minded meals and drinks, with alcohol available. One standout is the Shikibu-chan Kitchen Car, known for a 40cm long churro that is baked rather than fried, paired with an unsprayed-pesticide lemonade soda that sells 2,500 cups a year at festivals. Other stalls include a motsu-ni (offal stew) that makes vegetables easy to eat, a low-fat garlic shrimp sandwich, and a house-made sausage hot dog.
New this year is a free official festival app with a digital stamp rally. You collect stamps by visiting booths, buying food, and answering surveys. Three stamps get you a guaranteed-prize lottery draw, with prizes graded A through E. The app also lets you vote in the contest, so if you cannot get near the stage you can still participate from your phone.
Ikebukuro West Gate Park, officially Nishi-Ikebukuro Park, is a 1-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station's west exit. The outdoor theatre, called the Global Ring, is a covered amphitheatre inside the park.
