Sunshine Aquarium Refreshing Summer Festival 2026
Sunshine Aquarium, perched on the rooftop of the Sunshine City World Import Mart Building in Ikebukuro, hosts its Refreshing Summer Festival 2026 from July 17 to August 30. The festival transforms the aquarium regular programming into a summer-specific experience designed to beat the Tokyo heat, with splash shows, early-morning events, and seasonal creature displays. The centerpiece is a redesigned sea lion performance that incorporates water effects both on stage and around the audience area, running twice daily instead of the usual single show.
The aquarium has upgraded its water cannon for 2026, firing at shorter intervals to create a more immersive splash zone. The sea lion show, normally a standard training demonstration, becomes a summer-only spectacle where the animals interact with water sprays and the audience gets deliberately wet. This is one of the few aquarium experiences in Tokyo where getting splashed is part of the attraction, and the rooftop location means the water evaporates quickly in the summer heat.
Early Morning Programs and Penguin Strolls
New for 2026, the aquarium offers special early-morning programs from opening until 10:00 AM. These include a look at the penguins morning stroll, where the birds are walked through the aquarium outdoor areas before the main crowds arrive. A discounted early-morning admission ticket is available, making this the most affordable way to visit the aquarium during summer. The morning programs are quieter, cooler, and offer better photography conditions than the busy afternoon hours.
A special kids program runs on July 25, 26, August 22, and 23, from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM. Aimed at 4th to 6th grade elementary school students, the program costs 1,200 yen per child and includes hands-on learning activities about marine life. Capacity is limited to 20 children per session, and at least one accompanying adult is required. Registration opens on July 6 through the aquarium website.
Seasonal Creature Displays and Kids Summer Bags
The festival features a summer creature spotlight, highlighting marine animals that are particularly active or interesting during the summer season. The aquarium also sells a limited Kids Summer Bag, restricted to 100 units, containing 13,000 yen worth of merchandise for a reduced price. The bag includes a shark plush toy that feels cold to the touch, a karuta card game about sea creatures, a parent-child T-shirt set, and a guaranteed rare item such as a silver arowana scale or a naruto stingray tooth.
The Kids Summer Bags go on sale from July 18 at the Aqua Pocket shop on the aquarium second floor. Given the limited quantity and the value of the contents, these sell out quickly. The aquarium also runs a morning uchimizu (water-sprinkling) campaign as part of the early-morning programming, a traditional Japanese summer practice of sprinkling water on the ground to cool the air.
