The festival centres on a roughly 6-meter-tall yagura, a raised wooden tower, set up at the Sunshine Plaza on the rooftop of the Alpa shopping mall. Dancers circle the yagura to recorded and live Bon Odori music, and anyone can join the circle. Experienced dancers and instructors stand at the top of the tower to demonstrate the moves, so first-timers can follow along without prior practice.
What to expect at the yagura
Bon Odori is a summer tradition tied to Obon, the period when Japanese families honour the spirits of ancestors. The dance itself is communal and informal. You do not need a yukata to participate, though many attendees wear one. The atmosphere is closer to a neighbourhood block party than a staged performance, and the Sunshine City version has been running long enough that multiple generations of Toshima-ku residents attend each year.
Food stalls sell festival standards like takoyaki, kakigori (shaved ice), and yakisoba. Bring cash, since the stalls do not take cards or IC transit passes. A children's corner with carnival-style games runs alongside the dance area. The festival's stated purpose is to contribute to a bright, healthy, and vibrant community, and it is organized by Sunshine City with the backing of Toshima-ku.
Tips for attending
The event runs rain or shine for the dance itself, but heavy rain cancels the outdoor portion outright. There is no indoor backup venue. Check the Sunshine City official site or its X account on the day if the weather looks uncertain. The rooftop plaza gets crowded after 19:30, so arriving closer to the 19:00 start gives you a better spot near the yagura.
The plaza is on the rooftop of the Alpa building, accessible by elevator from the ground-floor shopping areas. From JR Ikebukuro Station, walk through the Sunshine City complex toward the World Import Mart building and take the elevator up. From Higashi-Ikebukuro Station on the Yurakucho Line, the plaza is a 3-minute walk. The festival ends at 21:15, and the last trains from Ikebukuro on the JR Yamanote Line and Tokyo Metro lines run until roughly 23:45 to 00:15 depending on the line.
For first-time visitors to Bon Odori, the dance is genuinely approachable. You do not need to know the choreography, and the dancers at the top of the yagura perform the same sequence repeatedly through the evening, so you can join the circle at any point, follow for a few rounds, and step out when you are tired. The crowd is a mix of elderly residents who have been coming for decades, families with young children, and younger attendees in yukata, so there is no pressure to perform. The festival is one of the few large free public events in central Tokyo where the focus is participation rather than spectatorship.
