Xiangju Hunan Cuisine Restaurant at Ikebukuro, Tokyo

Authentic Hunan cuisine from a Yueyang-born chef near Ikebukuro West Exit, famed for fiery chilli-laced dishes.

Xiangju Hunan Cuisine Restaurant, known in Japanese as Shojyu Konansai-kan, opened in February 2023 on the second floor of the Seiko Building near Ikebukuro's West Exit and is regarded as one of the first dedicated Hunan cuisine restaurants in the area. Run by a chef from Yueyang in Hunan province, it specialises in the bold, fiery and sour flavours that make Hunan cooking, often said to be spicier than Sichuan, so distinctive. The menu reaches well beyond the usual Chinese-Japanese staples, with signature dishes such as steamed fish head in pickled chilli, Chairman Mao-style braised pork belly, Changsha stinky tofu, smoked tea-leaf duck and Hunan rice noodles, plus a weekday lunch from 880 yen with a small-dish buffet for set-meal diners. The eighty-seat dining room is roomy and casual, the staff speak Japanese, and a one-drink-get-one-free Chinese-style service adds to the value. Ideal for spice lovers, curious eaters and groups after a genuine taste of inland China without leaving Tokyo, Xiangju pairs generous portions with a lively, almost-transportive atmosphere where Mandarin fills the air. It is a spirited, flavour-led reason to wander over to Ikebukuro's West Exit.
