About This Event / イベントについて
The Ancient Orient Museum Summer Exhibition — Ancient Oriental Buildings and Town Planning: Explore with Models! — runs from July 4 to September 6, 2026, at the Ancient Orient Museum on the 7th floor of Sunshine City's Bunka Kaikan Building in Ikebukuro. The exhibition presents over 30 scale models and life-size replicas of ancient architecture and urban settlements.
Key exhibits include a model of Uruk (the world's oldest city, circa 2500 BCE in modern-day Iraq), a model of Göbekli Tepe (humanity's oldest known temple, circa 8500 BCE in Turkey), and a reconstruction of Babylon including the ziggurat thought to be the basis for the Tower of Babel. Life-size replicas include an ancient Egyptian tomb (the tomb of Sennedjem, circa 1300 BCE) and a 4000-year-old Syrian dwelling excavated by the museum itself.
The exhibition also features models of diverse ancient cities including the Mycenaean fortress of Tiryns, a synagogue near Nazareth, an Egyptian artisans' village at Deir el-Medina, and the Silk Road caravan city of Palmyra. During the summer vacation period, the museum hosts children's workshops, hands-on experience corners, and mystery tours for families.
