The Hatsu-Jizo (First Jizo Market) on January 4 is one of the biggest fair days at Togenuki Jizo (Koganji Temple) in Sugamo, drawing approximately 100,000 visitors. The temple is known as "Grandma's Harajuku" for its popularity with older visitors.
The Daikan-gyo sutra reading ceremony takes place at 10:30 and 14:30, and the famous Sugamo Jizo-dori shopping street fills with food stalls and vendors. Sugamo is a short train ride from Ikebukuro on the JR Yamanote Line.
