Sunshine 60 Observatory Tenbou Park, the indoor observation deck sitting 251 meters above sea level in Ikebukuro, hosts its Summer Scenery event from July 9 to August 31, 2026. The event transforms the observatory into a sky-high summer garden, with approximately 550 sunflowers, 200 wind chimes, and 50 pinwheels arranged throughout the indoor space. The concept is a sky retreat (sora no hinsho) where visitors can experience Japanese summer aesthetics without the heat and humidity of street level.
The observatory is fully indoor, making it an unusual venue for a summer display. The sunflowers include both live plants and artificial arrangements, creating a pathway of yellow blooms against the backdrop of the Tokyo skyline visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The wind chimes (furin) are traditional Japanese glass bells that ring with the air conditioning currents, and the pinwheels (kazaguruma) add movement and color. The combination creates a distinctly Japanese summer atmosphere in a climate-controlled environment 251 meters above the city.
Sturgeon Moon Viewing and Ukulele Concert
The highlight of the summer program is the Sturgeon Moon viewing event on August 28, timed to coincide with the August full moon. The observatory sets up a telescope for moon viewing from 18:30 to 20:30, with the moon rising at approximately 18:16. A special ukulele concert by the duo Masha runs from 18:45 to 19:45, providing live music accompaniment to the moon viewing. The concert features ukulele and guitar arrangements performed against the backdrop of the rising moon and the Tokyo night skyline.
The moon viewing is included with standard observatory admission. The telescope is available on a first-come basis, and staff provide guidance on lunar observation. The Sturgeon Moon is the traditional name for the August full moon, named after the large fish caught in the Great Lakes region of North America during this period. In Japanese tradition, moon viewing (tsukimi) is a autumn cultural practice, and the Tenbou Park event bridges the summer festival season and the autumn viewing season.
Night Pair Tickets and Alcohol Bundle
For evening visitors, the observatory offers a Night Pair Ticket available from 19:00 onward, providing a 200 yen discount per adult (two adults for 1,200 to 2,200 yen depending on the date). The pair ticket includes a perk at the Tenbou Park Cafe: a double cream soda for 50 yen off when the ticket is presented. An alcohol-included admission ticket is also available for visitors aged 20 and over, priced from 1,350 to 1,850 yen, which includes one alcoholic drink at the cafe. These evening tickets go on sale from July 2 at 11:00 through the Asobii booking platform.
The observatory also hosts a body telescope workshop in collaboration with Bic Camera, Saitron Japan, and Ko Tokina, offering hands-on telescope building and astronomical observation. The workshops run on specific dates in July and August, with registration required in advance. The observatory standard hours during the event are 11:00 to 21:00, with last entry at 20:30.
