Zannen na Ikimono Exhibition 3 at Sunshine Aquarium
The third Zannen na Ikimono Exhibition (Regrettable Creatures Exhibition) runs at Sunshine Aquarium from March 13 to November 23, 2026, in Ikebukuro. The exhibition is the aquarium's third collaboration with the popular Encyclopedia of Disappointing Creatures book series, which profiles animals that try hard but somehow fall short in their evolutionary strategies. About 25 species are on display, drawn from the first through tenth books in the series.
Admission to the special exhibition is ¥600 as a standalone ticket, or ¥400 for visitors who also buy a ticket to the aquarium or another qualifying facility or event. The exhibition is held in the aquarium's special exhibition venue and is open during regular aquarium hours.
What regrettable creatures are on display
The series defines regrettable creatures as animals that are trying their best but whose adaptations do not quite work as intended. The exhibition pairs the real animals with newly drawn illustrations exclusive to this show, so visitors see both the living specimens and the cartoonish editorial framing that made the book series popular. The aquarium's curation adds its own angle, using its display techniques to highlight the behaviours and traits the books single out.
Running alongside the main exhibition through August 23 is the Zannen na Ikimono General Election at Sunshine Aquarium, where visitors vote for their favourite regrettable creature from those on display. The election is a companion piece rather than a separate event, and voting is included with exhibition entry.
Why the long run matters
The exhibition runs for over eight months, far longer than most of the aquarium's temporary shows. That long window makes it one of the most accessible special exhibitions at a major Tokyo aquarium this year. It overlaps with the summer school holiday period, the O-bon week, and the autumn school excursion season, so visiting on a weekday morning outside of the August peak gives the quietest experience.
The exhibition is indoors, so it is a good option on rainy or extremely hot days when the aquarium's outdoor exhibits are less comfortable. Note that November 12 is a scheduled closure day for the aquarium. Sunshine Aquarium is on the rooftop of the World Import Mart building, a 10-minute walk from JR Ikebukuro Station or 3 minutes from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station on the Yurakucho Line.
The Encyclopedia of Disappointing Creatures book series, which the exhibition is based on, has sold over 3 million copies across its 10 volumes. Each entry profiles an animal whose adaptations seem well-intentioned but do not quite achieve their goal, from the dumbo octopus that swims with ear-like fins but moves slowly, to the giant isopod that spends long periods motionless on the deep-sea floor. The exhibition's framing is gently comic, but the underlying science is accurate, which is part of why the books and the exhibition have drawn both children and adult readers. The General Election running alongside the main exhibition adds a competitive layer that gives visitors a reason to study the specimens carefully before voting.
