About This Event / イベントについて
The Ancient Orient Museum’s autumn show, From the Ancient Orient to Iwami Ginzan, opens 19 September 2026 on the 7th floor of Sunshine City’s Culture Center and runs through 6 December. It is the Tokyo leg of Shimane Prefecture’s countdown to 2027, when Iwami Ginzan marks 500 years since its discovery and 20 years as a World Heritage site.
Five chapters move from early metalwork to coins, the Age of Sail, and the mine itself. Loans include a Cleopatra VII silver coin from the museum’s own collection, Nefertem amulets from MIHO MUSEUM, a Nanban-style globe, a late-16th-century European map that already names Iwami, cho-gin bars tied to the Mori and Toyotomi, and a colourful mining-work picture scroll. Voice actor Tomokazu Seki records the audio guide. A 32-page colour catalogue is sold in the shop. Opening day, 19 September, gives the first 100 visitors an Iwami Ginzan ballpoint.
Tickets: adults ¥1,500, university and high-school students ¥1,000, elementary and junior-high students ¥400. Advance tickets are on Seven Ticket. The permanent galleries stay closed for this run. Related talks include a 24 October lecture on Black Sea copper and iron, free Iwami lectures on 3 and 15 November, and a children’s coin-making class on 4 October. Higashi-Ikebukuro Station is the nearest metro stop.

The museum is closed 8–18 September for installation. Do not plan a visit in that gap after the summer show.
