The Setsubun Festival at Togenuki Jizo (Koganji Temple) is one of the major annual events at this beloved Sugamo temple. The bean-throwing ceremony drives away evil spirits and invites good fortune for the coming year.
The temple is known as "Grandma's Harajuku" for its popularity with older visitors, and Setsubun draws large crowds to the Jizo-dori shopping street. Sugamo is a short ride from Ikebukuro on the JR Yamanote Line — a wonderful winter temple visit.
