Minna no Engawa Ikebukuro is a community-run cafe and salon in Ikebukuro's 3-chome, operated by the Toshima NPO Promotion Council and named after the wooden veranda where Japanese households once gathered to chat. The space sits opposite Ikebukuro Second Park, next to the local library, and doubles as a drop-in engawa cafe and a bookable rental space for workshops, mama-kai gatherings, mini-seminars, rakugo and circle activities. The atmosphere is deliberately homely, more like dropping in on a friend than visiting a business. The cafe menu leans on simple, carefully sourced fare: en-musubi rice balls in fillings such as salmon and edamame, saba-miso and shiso, or ume and myoga, made with rice selected by the specialist Matsumura rice shop, plus original en-chan cookies devised by cooking researcher Nagao Mutsuko, naan-style pizza, toast and imagawayaki. Drinks include organic coffee at 350 yen, with a 200 yen senior rate for the over-seventies, alongside tea, cocoa and herb blends. The cafe opens Monday to Wednesday and Friday from 11:00 to 18:00 and Thursday from 11:00 to 15:30, while the room is available to rent at other times. As a genuinely community-minded venture, Minna no Engawa offers something rare in central Ikebukuro: an unhurried, low-cost place to sit, eat lightly and meet neighbours, or to host a small event without hiring a formal venue.
